6-month break on training AI systems more potent than GPT-4

6-month break on training AI systems more potent than Chat GPT4

Elon Musk and many other technology experts called all the AI labs to pause the development of more robust systems than Chat GPT4, as it is enhancing the risks for humans and society.

There is an open letter from the Future of Life Institute, which is signed by more than 1,000 people, including Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and many more have urged to cease the development of AI tools until the best safety measures are designed to reduce the breach of regulations.

In the letter, it was written that “robust AI systems should develop once we assure that their results stay effective and the risks should be easily manageable.

The letter also detailed the possible concerns of this competitive human AI to our society and civilization in the form of economic and political disruptions. The developers were also called to work on governance and regulatory authorities.

ChatGPT is a viral AI chatbot that has surprised everyone with its research ability and produced AI-based accurate content. ChatGPT crossed 100 million users by January, just two months after its launch. It gives everything, from poetry like William Shakespeare to real laws.

The technology is based on a huge amount of data from the internet. However, this magical tool raised real concerns like plagiarism and misinformation.

In the letter of the Future of Life Institute, all the leaders accept that this artificial intelligence is meant to be risky for our society. So at present, AI technology’s main focus is on bringing safety, accuracy, interpretation, trustworthiness, robustness, and loyalty.

However, Open AI was not available for comment at that time.

Key Points-

  • Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak have signed an open letter urging artificial intelligence (AI) labs to stop training systems more potent than Chat GPT4, OpenAI’s latest language model.
  • The letter calls for a six-month pause on the development of advanced AI, citing concerns that it poses a risk to society.
  • Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has criticized the organization for diverging from its original purpose.
  • Other technology leaders also signed the letter.

The latter also said, “Contemporary AI systems are becoming human competitive, and we should ask ourselves, should we let machines flood our information channels with some propaganda and untruth?

Should we pursue the automation of all jobs, even fulfilling ones? Should we create artificial intelligence that could surpass us in intelligence, quantity, and capability and ultimately render us obsolete? And should we accept the risk of losing control over our civilization due to these developments?

The Future of Life Institute is a non-profit organization in Cambridge that aims to enhance and ethical development of Artificial Intelligence.

The Institute said all AI labs should stop operation for at least six months to train AI systems to make them stronger than Chat GPT4.

If we haven’t taken such a pause immediately, the risk will increase, and the government has to take a step in and institute a Moratorium.

Regulators’ Efforts to Address the Advancement of AI Technology

Open AI backs by Microsoft and made a total investment of $10 billion, which receives from Redmond, a technology giant of Washington. Microsoft has also integrated GPT’s natural language on its platform to make conversation smooth and seamless.

We have also seen that Google announced its AI conversational tool, Google Bard.

A few years back, Elon Musk claimed that AI would be the biggest evolution and could bring a higher risk for civilization.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO founded OpenAI in 2015 with Sam Altman, though he left the company in 2018 and did not hold any stake in the company. He criticized the company several times, saying it was diverging from its original purpose.

However, regulators are also racing for AI tools to get a handle on it because AI is bringing a revolution in this ecosystem at a rapid pace.

The UK government also issued a white paper in which they suggested that the government should take some serious action to regulate the use of AI tools with predetermined and existing laws.

In conclusion, Artificial Intelligence is rapidly evolving and attracting significant investment from major tech companies like Microsoft and Google.

However, as technology advances, concerns over its potential risks to society have also grown, with prominent figures like Elon Musk warning about the dangers of AI. As a result, regulators worldwide are working to develop policies and laws to help mitigate these risks while promoting innovation and growth in the field.

It remains to be seen how AI will continue to develop and impact our lives. Still, it will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of technology and society.

What is GPT technology?

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, an artificial neural network used in natural language processing. GPT technology is designs to generate human-like text by predicting the most likely next word or phrase based on the context of the previous text.

What is Google Bard?

Google Bard is a conversational AI product for consumers that Google announced in response to Microsoft’s integration of OpenAI’s GPT technology into the Bing search engine. It designs to help users find information and answer questions through natural language conversations.

Why is Elon Musk concerned about AI?

Elon Musk has expressed concerns about AI because he believes it represents one of the most significant risks to civilization. Musk has warned that AI could become too powerful and potentially harmful if left unchecked and has called for greater regulation and oversight of AI research and development.

What are regulators doing to address the advancement of AI technology?

Regulators worldwide are working to develop policies and laws to address the risks and benefits of AI technology. It includes efforts to ensure that AI systems are transparent, fair, and accountable and developed and used to promote public safety and well-being. Different regulators are responsible for supervising the use of AI tools in their respective sectors by applying existing laws.
